What is Gastroenterology and Endoscopy?

Gastroenterology focuses on diagnosing and treating conditions affecting the digestive system, including the oesophagus, stomach, intestines, liver, and pancreas.

An endoscopy is a safe, minimally invasive procedure used by specialists to examine the inside of your digestive tract. A thin, flexible tube with a camera (an endoscope) is gently passed through the mouth or bottom, allowing your doctor to clearly view internal organs and identify any problems.

Images are displayed in real-time, helping your consultant make an accurate diagnosis and, where needed, perform treatment during the same procedure.

Our Services:

We offer a complete gastroenterology pathway, from initial consultation to diagnosis and treatment:

Specialist Consultations

  • Initial consultation with an experienced gastroenterologist
  • Face-to-face or telephone appointments
  • Follow-up reviews and ongoing care plans

Endoscopy Procedures:

We provide three main procedures:

  • Gastroscopy (OGD)
Examines the oesophagus, stomach, and upper small intestine

How long does an endoscopy take?

The procedure itself is usually quite quick:

  • Gastroscopy (OGD): around 15–20 minutes
  • Colonoscopy: around 30–45 minutes
  • Flexible sigmoidoscopy: around 20–30 minutes

Although the procedure is short, you should allow up to 3 hours in total for your visit. This includes your admission, nursing checks, time to speak with your consultant, the procedure itself, and recovery afterwards.

What pain relief or sedation is available?

For a gastroscopy (OGD), we usually use a local anaesthetic throat spray to numb the back of the throat. Many patients find this is enough to make the procedure manageable and comfortable.

We can also offer Entonox (gas and air) for some procedures. Entonox is a fast-acting pain relief option that you breathe in through a mouthpiece. It can help you feel more comfortable during the procedure and wears off quickly afterwards.

In addition, we can offer conscious sedation for any of our endoscopy procedures. This helps you feel relaxed and drowsy, while still allowing you to respond to instructions during the procedure.

If you choose to have sedation:

  • You will need someone to take you home afterwards
  • You should have someone stay with you for the next 24 hours
  • You should not drive, operate machinery, sign important documents, or drink alcohol during this time

Our team will discuss your options with you beforehand so you can choose what feels right for you.

Who performs my endoscopy?

Your procedure will be carried out by an experienced Consultant Gastroenterologist.

You will also be supported by our dedicated endoscopy team, including highly trained specialist nurses and clinical staff, who will look after you throughout your visit.

We pride ourselves on delivering care that is professional, reassuring, and patient-centred from start to finish.

What happens during my procedure?

Before your appointment, you will be given clear instructions on how to prepare. This may include fasting or taking bowel preparation, depending on the type of procedure you are having.

When you arrive:

  • you will check in at reception
  • a member of our endoscopy team will take you through to the unit
  • we will carry out your admission checks, including things like blood pressure and general observations
  • your consultant will see you before the procedure and answer any questions
  • if you are having sedation, a small cannula will be placed in your arm or hand

During the procedure, the endoscope is gently passed into the body to allow the consultant to examine the relevant area. Our nurses will be with you throughout.

Your comfort and safety are very important to us. If at any point you feel uncomfortable, you can let the team know and we will respond immediately.

After the procedure, you will spend some time in recovery, particularly if you have had sedation. Once you are ready, your consultant will explain the findings, provide your report, and let you know what happens next.

With your permission, we can also send a copy of your report to your GP.

Do I need someone to come with me?

If you are having sedation, yes, you will need someone to take you home and stay with you afterwards.
If you are not having sedation, you may usually attend on your own, depending on the procedure and your circumstances.

Will the procedure hurt?

Most patients find endoscopy uncomfortable rather than painful. Our team will do everything possible to keep you comfortable, and sedation is available if appropriate.

How do I prepare for my procedure?

Preparation depends on the procedure you are having. You will receive full instructions in advance, which may include fasting, dietary changes, or bowel preparation medication.

When will I get my results?

In many cases, your consultant will explain the initial findings on the same day. If biopsies are taken, those results usually take longer and will be discussed with you at follow-up.

Can biopsies be taken during the procedure?

Yes. If needed, your consultant may take a small tissue sample during the procedure. This is routine and helps with diagnosis. It is usually painless.

Is endoscopy safe?

Endoscopy is generally a very safe procedure when carried out by experienced specialists. As with any medical procedure, there are some risks, and these will be explained to you before your appointment.

Can I eat and drink afterwards?

This depends on the type of procedure you have had and whether you received sedation. Our team will give you clear advice before you go home.

Do I need a referral?

Patients can usually book a private consultation directly, where your specialist can decide whether an endoscopy is needed.

Where will my endoscopy take place?

Your procedure will take place at our clinic in Northenden, Manchester:

Parkway House
Palatine Road
Northenden
Manchester
M22 4DB

If you need help with directions or have any questions before your appointment, our team will be happy to assist.
